INFORMATION AVAILABLE The Twelfth Annual 24 Mile Tampa Bay
Marathon Swim will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2008 to
celebrate Earth Day and the revitalization of Florida's
largest estuary. The race is open to masters swimmers from around the world, age 19 and above. Entries for the 2009 event are being accepted as of October 27, 2008. Entry

Australian Penny Palfrey opened an early lead over the field and finished with a 1/2 mile advantage to set a new women's record at the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim. Palfrey, 45, from Townsville, Queensland, Australia, completed the race in 7 hours, 51 minutes, 24 seconds to break the women's record that was held by Gail Rice of Miami, Florida.

The 21-mile crossing of the English Channel is the
open-water peak for challengers such as Clearwater Beach lifeguard
Ron Collins. They call it the Everest of open-water swimming. "It
doesn't matter how many times you have swam around Manhattan or
across Tampa Bay," Clearwater Beach lifeguard Ron Collins said a
few days before he would attempt to add his name to the record book.
"When it comes to long-distance swims, there is only one that matters
and that is the English Channel."
